How to study properly to boost your grades

If you just joined college, you might be having a hard time keeping up with all the reading you have to do. Everything you do requires reading, may it completing assignments, preparing for the next lesson, or revising for exams. But reading does not have tobe as complicated as many students make it seem. You can prepare yourself properly in advance to make the going easier. If you become an active reader, what may originally seem like a complex block of text may appear a lot easier. However, active reading requires you to always be on top of things. That means you should ask questions whenever you findyourself stuck, taking a well-calculated approach, and selecting a reading that relates to the task or question at hand.

Most courses will require you to read widely. For instance,you will be required to do a pre-read before attending your classes in order to be on the same page with your professors. You will also be expected to read tutorials designed for class discussions so that you can be able to participate in them effectively.  Not only that, you cannot do your assignment if you are not able to read and research properly. That is why you need to familiarize yourself with tips for reading effectively so that you can manage the workload effectively. The man objective of studying is to collect information related to the course you are pursuing or the assignment you are writing. Knowing how to read effectively will help you gather all the data you need to succeed in your coursework.

1.      Read with a purpose

Do not just read for the sake of it or just to show your friends that you have a new textbook. You need tostudy with a goal in mind. Maybe you want to meet a tight deadline, perform better in an exam, or prepare your assignment – reading with a purpose will help you reap maximum benefits of your study. Reading in university is not a show off. If you are going to achieve your academic dreams, then you must start by reading right. Before you grab a textbook,make sure you know what you want to achieve. May be you want to locate some information, understand a difficult topic, gain an overview of some concepts, or enjoy words. Perhaps you have been attending classes all day and want to escape into a good novel. Having a purpose for your reading is the best and easiest way to achieve your goals. Knowing why you want to read something will give you an idea of how you are going to read it and what strategies to use in order to grasp the concept.

2.      Choose what you read

You will be required to read a lot of things in university  within a limited time. You therefore need to make a decision on what you want to read, what is important, and how much you can grasp within the short time. When your professor issues you with the course outline, establish what readings are compulsory. The lecture will probably have these marked to make things easier for you. When reading a topic, there are times when you will need to go through the entire chapter to understand the basics. Other times you only have to pick specific information or a couple of pages to get useful information. Once you have selected what you want to read based on relevance you can discard the rest or put it aside for when you are not too busy. To select the right reading, know exactly what it is that you are looking for. Make use of keywords, as these will help you find information easily.  If you are using an offline source of information, use the table of contents to find things easily but if you are searching information offline, just the keyword on the search engine an you will find the information you seek. If you happen to find a “related searches” field, use it, as this will make your search even much easier.

3.      Focus on the task

Concentrate on what you are required to do. If you are working on your assignment for instance, focus on the instructions to know what is required of you. Once this is done, go through the paper and identify the questions you can answer without assistance from a friend or homework help service providers. You can write these down on a rough paper to research later. Do not dwell too much on questions you find a little complicated or those that you think you cannot handle on your own. Similarly, if you are reading to gain information on something, study areas you find easy to understand first and mark those that you feel you need some assistance. Later when your mind has rested, you can try reading again or ask for help from your professor or study partner.

4.      Acknowledge what you already know

This is important andcan save you a lot of time. Before you start studying a topic, make sure to jot down what you already know. Any knowledge thatyou acquired in your past study or experience will help you understand the material much better. Read any questions related to the topic to prepare yourself for what you are about to face. If it is a topic you have not studied before, start with the general introduction so thatyou can have an idea of what the topic is about. Change the headings and subheadings into questions and answer these as you study. You will retain information more when you study with some questions in mind than when reading blocks of text and hoping for the best.

5.      Break reading into chunks

Reading a long and complex block of text can be intimidating. It is one of the ways that could kill your motivation to keep studying. If you want to have  a good understanding of what you are reading and remember it in the future, learn to break your reading into smaller manageable segments. Identify what you want to achieve and see what you can do within the available time. Set a goal for yourself for the time you want to have completed a specific segment, what you want to have achieved, and how much time you expect to take. Plan more time for complex segments than those that seem easy to understand. Make sure toreward yourself with breaks once you have competed a certain number of segments in order to give your mind tie to recharge for the next tasks. Depending on what you want to achieve, some goal or tasks will be larger or smaller than others. Give priority to those that you can carry out easily so you can feel motivated to keep working. While at it, avoid distractions as much as you can. These include social media messaging, answering and making calls, or texting when you should actually be doing an important task. Save these for when you are taking your break. If possible, do your reading in a quiet place but if you are one of those students who are more productive in areas that have a little distraction, you can play some soft music when you are accomplishing your task. Just make sure that the music is not too loud to disturb the rest of the people in the room.

6.      Keeptrack of things you have read

As we mentioned, in university, you will be required to study so much with too little time. As such, you just cannot afford to read one topic twice while there are other topics that you have not covered at all. To make sure that this does not happen, always note down what you have read and what you haven’t. Where possible, record the details of the name of the book, the author, and the page number from which you got the information. That way even when you are studying your notes later and need some clarification from the textbook, it will be easier for you to get hold of any data you seek.

7.      Read the textbook once

…but your notebook often. Reading textbooks can be intimidating and that’s why you should always have your notebook to summarize things. If you want to succeed in college and have good grades, then you must make sure your notes are comprehensive enough to make this happen. Studying your notes instead of textbooks will get you understanding things and retaining information faster. It will also save you a lot of time when revising for your exams or working on your assignments, as you will not have to keep going back and forth to the textbook.
